Why calls fail

Why Can't I Call 1800 Numbers?

When 1800 calls fail, the cause is almost always one of four: the digits, dialling from overseas, a restriction on your phone or plan, or the business's own setup. Fixes in order below.

Why can't I call? Questions

Why does one 1800 number fail while others connect?

Then the fault sits with that business — its routing, account or answer point — not with your phone. Use the contact details on its website instead.

Can I call 1800 numbers from overseas?

Generally no. The 1800 range is domestic to Australia and not published for international dialling. Use the business's website, email or a +61 geographic number.

My mobile plan may be blocking 1800 calls — is that possible?

Yes, on some restricted or credit-exhausted plans calls to special ranges fail. If no 1800 number connects from your phone while others work, your carrier can check the account.

Are 1800 calls still free from landlines?

Yes — the toll-free guarantee for Australian fixed lines is unconditional. If a landline call to a valid 1800 number is failing, the fault is on the business's side.

When 1800 numbers will not connect, run the four causes in order — the first two take seconds, and the list clears virtually every failure. Callers and number owners share the same sequence; only the last step differs.

Cause 1: the digits

An 1800 number is ten digits — 1800 plus six — dialled with no area code from within Australia. Copied numbers pick up typos and dropped digits. Re-dial the number exactly as the business prints it on its own website, not from memory or a third-party listing.

Cause 2: dialling from overseas

1800 numbers are domestic: dialled from other countries they fail at the network, because the range is not published for international access. If you are abroad — in the US, Ireland, anywhere — use the business's website, email or a +61 geographic number; the country-specific walkthroughs are in calling 1300 from overseas and 1800 numbers from overseas.

Cause 3: your phone or plan

If no 1800 number connects from your phone while ordinary calls work, your side is the variable: a plan restricting special ranges, exhausted prepaid credit, or a network fault. Try a different phone; if the pattern follows the handset, your carrier can check the account in minutes. What 1800 calls cost on your plan is a separate question with the same source — your carrier's terms.

Cause 4: the business''s setup

If other 1800 numbers connect and one specific number never does, stop troubleshooting your phone. The fault is on the business's side: routing rules pointing somewhere dead, an account out of credit, or an offline answer point. Nothing you dial differently will fix it. Owners working through that side should use the five-cause diagnostic in 1800 numbers not working.

The one-minute triage

  1. Re-dial all ten digits, no area code.
  2. In Australia? Overseas callers need a different route.
  3. Try another 1800 number — if it connects, your phone is fine.
  4. One stubborn number: the business has the fault; every number failing: your carrier does.

The caller-side dialling guide with costs is in how to call an 1800 number, and the product overview at 1800 numbers. If you run the number that keeps failing, the routing setup that prevents this is covered there too.
