1300 number cost questions
What is the cheapest 1300 number plan?
The Prepaid 1300 plan is $10 per month and includes $5 of call credit. Light 1300 is $15 per month with the same included credit. See the pricing page for every plan and its current rates.
How much do callers pay to ring a 1300 number?
Callers pay no more than the local call rate from a fixed landline anywhere in Australia. From a mobile, what a caller pays depends on their plan and provider, so callers should check with their mobile carrier.
Do business call rates change by call type?
Yes. Terminating calls cost the business a different rate depending on whether they originate from a fixed line or a mobile. Current landline and mobile per-minute rates for every plan are listed on the pricing page.
Are rates charged by the minute or the second?
Call charges are calculated on a per-second basis and the published rates are expressed per minute, so you pay only for the time actually used.
Can I bring an existing 1300 number across?
Yes. Existing 1300, 1800 and landline numbers can be ported so you keep the number your customers already know and move it onto your chosen plan.
A 1300 number gives your business one national contact number. The cost has two parts: a fixed monthly plan fee that starts at $10, and call charges for the traffic your number receives. Callers pay no more than a local call rate, and your business pays the balance of each call.
What you pay each month
1300 number plans run from $10 to $99 per month, so the plan fee scales with your call volume rather than your ambition:
- Prepaid 1300 — $10 per month, includes $5 call credit
- Light 1300 — $15 per month, includes $5 call credit
- Cap39 plans — $39 per month, with included fixed-line and/or mobile minutes
- Cap79 1300 — $79 per month with 750 fixed-line and 300 mobile minutes included
- High Volume 1300 — $99 per month, includes $99 call credit
With the cap plans, the monthly fee is the only amount charged until your included value is used. Once the inclusions run out, calls continue at the plan's per-minute rate. All prices are quoted excluding GST, and call charges are calculated per second with rates expressed per minute. The full pricing table lists current inclusions and call rates for every plan.
Who pays for the call
1300 numbers use a shared-cost model. The caller pays up to the local call rate and the business pays the rest of the call cost. That split is what makes a 1300 number cheaper to run than a 1800 number, where the business covers the entire call.
Two things drive what your business pays per call:
- Call origin. Calls terminating from a fixed line cost less than calls terminating from mobiles, so the mix of landline and mobile callers changes your bill.
- Call duration. Charging is per second, so shorter calls cost less and there is no rounding up to the next minute.
If most of your calls are short, fixed-line enquiries answered during business hours, your per-call cost stays near the bottom of the range. If your callers are predominantly mobile, expect the higher mobile termination rates to apply.
What the plan fee includes
The monthly fee covers the number and the call management platform, including:
- call routing to your existing landline or mobile answer points
- time-based routing so after-hours calls go to voicemail-to-email or an alternate number
- IVR / auto-attendant menus for routing callers by keypress
- call recording and call reporting so you can see volumes, durations and origins
Because a 1300 number is virtual, there is no hardware to install — calls answer on the phones you already use.
Estimating your monthly bill
Work from two numbers: your plan fee and your expected included call volume.
- Choose the plan whose included minutes or call credit best matches your typical month.
- If your calls stay within the inclusions, your monthly cost is the plan fee.
- For calls beyond the inclusions, multiply the extra minutes by the plan's per-minute rate for the call origin.
For example, a business on the Cap39 1300 plan that stays within its 250 included fixed-line minutes pays $39 for the month. A business that exceeds its inclusions pays the plan fee plus the per-minute rate on the overflow only. If you are unsure which plan fits, start on a lower plan and check the call reporting after the first month.
1300 or 1800: which costs less?
| | 1300 number | 1800 number | |---|---|---| | Caller pays | Up to the local call rate | Nothing — free to call | | Business pays | Remaining call cost | Entire call cost | | Monthly plans from | $10/month | $10/month |
Both products share the same routing, IVR, recording and reporting capabilities, so the cost difference comes down to who pays for call time. Businesses that want to remove every cost barrier for callers choose 1800; businesses watching their own call spend choose 1300. Compare the products in 1300 vs 1800 numbers or see 1800 number pricing.
Keeping your 1300 number affordable
- Match the plan to your volume. Cap plans protect you from per-minute charges until inclusions are used; prepaid suits light, occasional traffic.
- Route after-hours calls to voice-to-email instead of an answered line when the enquiry can wait until morning.
- Watch the reporting. Call volumes and durations by origin show you which plan and routing setup actually fits your traffic.
- Port an existing number rather than reprinting everything if you already advertise a 1300 number — the number moves to your new plan.
