Call Tracking Metrics: What to Measure and How

The metrics worth tracking are the ones that change budget decisions: calls per campaign, calls per period, and how those calls were handled. Here is how number-based tracking produces them.

Call tracking metrics questions

What metrics does number-based call tracking produce?

Call volume attributed to each tracking number — and therefore to each campaign or medium that displays it — reported over time, with call recording available for reviewing how those calls were handled.

Which metric should I look at first?

Calls per campaign over a comparable period. It is the number that answers "which medium earns its spend", and every other analysis builds on it.

Does call tracking measure revenue or conversions?

Number-based tracking measures calls, not what happens after them. Pair the call counts with your own sales outcomes to estimate revenue per campaign — or review recordings to judge lead quality.

How many tracking numbers do I need?

One per campaign medium you want to compare: a website number, a radio number, a print number. Plans start at $5 a month per number, with call data charged per minute.

Call tracking metrics are only useful if they change a decision. The decision most businesses face is where to put the next marketing dollar, and the metrics that answer it are refreshingly few: how many calls each campaign generated, how that volume moves over time, and whether the calls were any good. Here is how number-based tracking — the model our platform runs — produces each one.

Metric 1: calls per campaign

Give each advertising medium its own tracking number: the website displays one number, the radio campaign another, print and letterbox drops their own. Every call to each number is counted and attributed to the medium that displayed it. The report answers the question no click-counter can: which channels make the phone ring?

Metric 2: volume over time

Single data points flatter and lie; trends do not. Because each tracking number reports consistently, week-on-week and month-on-month comparisons come free: the radio number that surged during the campaign and collapsed after, the website number that grows with your SEO, the print number that never moved. This is the metric that survives the budget meeting.

Metric 3: what the calls were like

Numbers measure quantity; recordings measure quality. Call recording rides along with the tracking, so you can review whether the calls a campaign delivered were the leads you wanted — and whether they were handled the way your customers deserve. Between the count and the recording, "the campaign brought 60 calls" becomes "the campaign brought 60 calls, 40 were genuine enquiries, and 20 were mishandled."

What these metrics are not

Stated plainly: number-based tracking attributes calls to the medium displaying the number. It does not identify the keyword a visitor searched, the ad they clicked, or the revenue that closed after the call — those require session-level tools and your own sales data. If those are the metrics you need, evaluate dynamic-insertion products explicitly. If the question is "which medium deserves the next dollar", per-number metrics answer it, from $5 a month per number with call data charged per minute — the tiers are on the pricing page.

Setting up your first metrics

  1. List the mediums you want to separate — start with three or four, not thirty.
  2. Allocate a number to each from the pool; local and regional numbers are available from 40+ regions.
  3. Place each number only on its medium, consistently, for a full comparison period.
  4. Read the first month''s report, listen to a sample of recordings, and re-allocate budget on evidence rather than instinct.
