Cheap without the catch

Cheap Call Tracking Software, Honestly Costed

The cheapest useful call tracking is number-based: a virtual number per campaign at a few dollars a month, with call data billed by the second. Here is what the real bill looks like — and where cheap plans stop being cheap.

Cheap call tracking questions

What is the cheapest call tracking that actually works?

Number-based tracking: a virtual number per campaign, with calls logged and reported per number. Plans start at $2 a month per number, so a five-campaign setup costs a few dollars a month plus call time.

What is the hidden cost in cheap plans?

Call data. The number fee is small; the per-minute charges for the calls that arrive are the real line item — and rates differ between fixed-line and mobile-originated calls. Compare plans at your actual minutes, not at zero.

Are free call tracking options any good?

Be wary of free tiers that monetise the call data or expire just as the comparison period ends. A paid number at $2 a month is cheap enough that the free options rarely justify their strings.

When does cheap become a false economy?

When the number pool is too shallow to add campaigns, the per-minute rates are high, or reports cannot be exported. The saving that matters is per number at your volume — check that before the headline price.

Call tracking has a reputation for enterprise pricing, which is strange, because the mechanism — a virtual number per campaign and a log of the calls that arrive — costs almost nothing to run. The expensive products are the ones adding session-level machinery on top. If your question is "which medium earns its spend", the cheap end of the market is also the correct one. Here is what cheap looks like when it is costed honestly.

The floor: number-based tracking

A tracking number is a virtual number that routes to the phone you answer, and logs every call that arrives on it. Plans start at $2 a month per number. A five-campaign setup — website, radio, print, two ad campaigns — runs about $10 a month in number fees, with call data billed separately. That is the entire apparatus needed to answer "which campaign makes the phone ring", and nothing about it is a trial or a teaser.

The mechanics — what a tracking number is and the placement rule that makes its data honest — are explained in the call tracking phone number.

The real bill: call data, not number fees

The line item that grows is the call time. Call data is charged per second against per-minute rates that vary by plan and by whether the caller is on a fixed line or a mobile — mobile-originated calls bill at a premium across the inbound market. The pattern to expect:

  • Light call traffic: number fees dominate, and the total stays in the low tens of dollars.
  • Heavy call traffic: call time dominates, and the higher tracking tiers — with lower per-minute rates — overtake the entry plan despite the higher fee.

That second point is where "cheap" needs care: the cheapest plan at high volume is often not the cheapest bill. Compare the tiers at your actual minutes; the current rates are on the pricing page, and the floor-to-volume economics are the same trade described in cheapest call tracking software.

Where cheap plans are not cheap

Three traps to check in any budget offering, ours included:

  1. Per-minute rates that exceed the plan saving. A $1 cheaper number fee is worthless if the rate per minute is 8c higher at 500 minutes.
  2. Shallow number pools. A pool that cannot supply numbers from your regions — or from 40+ regions generally — limits the campaigns you can separate.
  3. Data you cannot leave with. Reports that cannot be exported, and numbers that cannot be ported, convert a cheap tool into an expensive habit.

What cheap cannot buy

Stated plainly: number-based tracking does not attribute keywords or sessions, and it does not write calls into your CRM automatically. Those capabilities live in the DNI category and integration-heavy platforms, and they cost more for structural reasons — per-session number pools and connector maintenance are real work. If the decision you need to make is the media-budget one, none of that machinery is required. The fit question is worked through in what the best call tracking system means, and the campaign model itself is on call tracking.
