The mechanism
How Does Call Tracking Software Work?
The per-number model in one sentence: each campaign displays its own phone number, the network counts the calls to each, and the reports tie volumes to sources — no apps, no site scripts.
- One number per campaign
- Network-level counting
- From $5/month, recording included
How it works questions
How does call tracking know which campaign produced a call?
Each campaign displays a different tracking number. Calls to each number are counted and reported separately, so the call's source is simply the number the customer dialled — no guesswork involved.
Does call tracking need an app or website script?
Not in the per-number model. The tracking lives in the network: numbers route and report at the platform level. Your phone receives calls normally, and nothing is installed anywhere.
What happens when a customer calls a tracking number?
The call routes to your answer point like any other call while the platform logs it against that number's campaign — volume, and optionally a recording, appear in the reporting.
Does call tracking capture text messages?
Our call tracking measures phone calls — volumes and recordings per tracking number. We do not claim SMS tracking; if message attribution matters, evaluate tools that sell it explicitly.
Call tracking software works because of a property of phone networks people forget: every phone number is independently routable and countable. Give each advertising campaign its own number, and the network does the attribution for you — calls to the radio number were produced by the radio, calls to the website number by the website. The software's job is allocation, counting and reporting; the mechanism needs no apps and no website scripts.
The mechanism, step by step
- Allocation. Each campaign or medium is assigned a tracking number — 1300, 1800 or regional digits — from the platform's pool.
- Placement. The number appears only on its own campaign: the website shows the website number, the radio ad reads the radio number.
- Routing. A customer dials the number they saw; the network routes the call to your answer point exactly like any other call.
- Counting. The platform logs the call against that number's campaign — timestamped, and recorded if you enable it.
- Reporting. Volumes per number, compared across periods, answer the question the whole setup exists for: which campaigns make the phone ring?
Because attribution rides on which number was dialled, it is transparent: when the report says the print campaign generated forty calls, you can see exactly why.
What the mechanism does not do
Stated plainly, our platform's boundary: per-number tracking attributes calls to the medium displaying the number — not to the keyword a visitor searched (that is dynamic number insertion, which we do not sell; the comparison is in call tracking DNI). And it measures calls, not SMS or form fills — we do not claim message tracking.
What it costs to run
Tracking plans start at $5 a month per number with call data charged per minute, recording included, and numbers available from more than 40 regions — the current tiers on the pricing page. Three campaign numbers cover most small businesses; the cost scales with the measurement you actually need. The workflow in full is on the call tracking pillar, the metrics in call tracking metrics, and the setup steps in phone call tracking.
